How To Chop An Onion Without Tears

Though I don’t do it as often as I should, I love cooking. Today I’m in the process of making what I hope to be a delicious dish of Thai Curry Beef, and the chopping of onions is killing my eyes. I seem to have sensitive eyes in general (probably because of too many hours spent in front of a computer) and this is really one task that makes me cringe. Luckily, there are a few solutions offered to this problem.

The one that worked for me was to put the peeled onion in the freezer for ten minutes. Also, keeping them refrigerated is a listed option as well.

Another option which I haven’t tried, is to wear swimming goggles while chopping onions. Granted you’ll look kind of silly, but you’ll be able to chop onions like any other vegetable.

I have to use a timer to remember the onion in the freezer after the time I learned a solidly-frozen onion won’t chop. (Bear in mind I also once froze a $50 bottle of champagne. I generally don’t use the freezer to chill things, just for storage.)

Swimming goggles do work for me, but I have to bend over closer to the onion because I’m so nearsighted without my glasses. Heh.

Yep, I used the timer on my microwave myself– I get easily distracted.
